Poicephalus and Senegal Parrot Guide

About Poicephalus and Senegal Parrots

A big parrot in a small package, Poicephalus are beautiful parrots in spite of the rather awkward sounding name. Available in a variety of sizes, most Poicephalus have short blunt tails and dark beaks. Poicephalus love to chew, and need to have a variety of safe, sturdy toys available to entertain them. Poicephalus are not known to be especially loud, making them good medium-sized birds for people who live in apartments. These birds enjoy playing, climbing, and holding toys and food in their feet.

Meyer's Poicephalus (Poicephalus Meyeri)
The Meyer's Poicephalus is the smallest member of the Poicephalus family at 21 centimeters long. The back and undersides of the Meyer's are a bright turquoise green, the body is predominately charcoal and the shoulders, thighs and underwing coverts yellow. Adult Meyer's also have a yellow spot on the top of their heads.

Senegal Poicephalus (Poicephalus Senegalus)
This striking bird has a dark gray hood, orange chest topped with a green "V," and yellow underwing and undertail coverts. The most popular of the Poicephalus species, the Senegal makes an entertaining and engaging pet.
