Kakarikis Parrot Guide
Kakariki is the Maori word for "Little Parrot". These
beautiful, active little birds are native to New Zealand, and are currently finding their
way into the hearts and homes of bird-lovers everywhere. These highly energetic little
birds are born entertainers who love to perform acrobatics. They are very inquisitive and
like to explore everything they can reach. This makes them fairly accident-prone, so care
must be taken to "bird-proof" their play area. Like in their native habitat,
these birds enjoy a slightly cooler temperature, and can be kept outdoors in milder
climates, as long as they are protected from wind and sun. Indoors, a larger cage with a
flat, wire roof is necessary to satisfy the Kakarikis' play and exercise needs. They are
relatively quiet birds which are well suited to indoors and apartment living. They are
friendly, happy little birds that love human attention. Unlike more cuddly birds,
Kakarikis prefer to run around getting into mischief and delighting their owners with
their antics. They should be offered a varied diet,
including bird pellets, nuts, seeds, fruits and berries, vegetables and proteins like eggs
and chicken bones. They are very fast flyers, and their wings must be trimmed on a regular
basis. As with all intelligent pet birds, owning one requires a firm commitment to
providing the care and attention the bird needs in order to thrive. If you are
considering making a Kakarikis a part of your family, be prepared to spend at least a few
hours each day playing with your bird.
