All About
Cockatoos
When
they hear the word, "Cockatoo",
most people immediately think of the large, white bird with an
impressive crest. Many people do not realize that many variations are
included within the Cockatoo species, ranging from the beautiful
Moluccan Cockatoo with it's fabulous salmon-coloured plumage to the Black
Cockatoo, who's dark feathers match it's name. Though some bird
fanciers may find the Cockatoo a bit less colourful than some of it's
relatives in the Parrot family, the Cockatoo is no less spectacular
nor less trainable. Cockatoos have
very affectionate personalities - they form very strong bonds with
their owners and require plenty of attention and companionship.
Cockatoos are very social birds that naturally live in large flocks.
They bond for life and if they do not receive the attention that they
crave, they can become depressed or even begin to act quite
strangely. Anyone thinking about purchasing a Cockatoo for a pet must
realize just how much of an important part of the pet's life you will become. Because of their size, Cockatoos tend to be loudly
vocal, especially in the morning and evening. Some Cockatoos hardly
ever use their strong voices, but most are not suited to being kept in
an apartment or condo. The Cockatoo diet consists of pellets and small
seeds mixed together. They also love fresh fruit and vegetables and
large nuts as treats.
Cockatoos have large, strong beaks and require toys made of wood and
natural branches to chew and gnaw on. This enables them to keep their
beaks trim and at the same time provides them with much needed
entertainment. Cockatoos are
charming, affectionate and intelligent birds with wonderful
temperaments and tameness. As with all
intelligent, affectionate pet birds, it is important to be aware of
the responsibilities that go along with ownership. Be sure to visit
the Pet Bird
Bookstore for owner's guides to a variety of wonderful pet birds.
