Caique Parrot Guide

About Caique Parrots

Caiques are playful, colorful and energetic birds  that are native to South America.   They measure about 9 inches in length. There are two species of Caiques - Black Head Caiques (Pionites Melanocephala) and White Belly Caiques (P. Leucogaster). Both types have white torsos, gold/apricot legs and green wings, however the head color does differ between the two species. Black Head Caiques come from the area covering Guianas and South Venezuela to Northeast Peru and Northern Brazil. White Belly Caiques are native to the tropical forests of the Amazon basin.

Caiques are very playful and enjoy spending lots of time either with their toys or playing with another Caique. Caiques should be given plenty of exercise time, and need large cages with lots of room to play and exercise.

Caiques are energetic birds that need an appropriate diet for so much activity. Low-fat seeds or pellets, as well as food from the fruit and vegetable, protein, and carbohydrate groups are the main components of the Caiques diet.
