About Budgies (Budgeriars)

Often confused with the Parakeet, budgies are small, cheerful birds that come in a colorful array of shades. One of the world's most popular pet birds, Budgies have an endearing personality and talking ability, ranking them in the top three. Budgies are small, slender parrots measuring just 7 inches or so. A sexing indicator is the color of the bird's cere. Males have blue ceres while females have brownish ceres.

Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)  come in many colors. The original budgies from Australia had green bodies and yellow heads. Other colors seen in many pet shops include blue with a white head, solid yellow (lutino) or solid white (albino).

Budgies can learn to talk, and have the ability to learn a large number of words and phrases. Their voices are not as close to humans as other birds' are, but the and words and phrases can be heard distinctly amongst their chattering.

Budgies have a tendency to be picky eaters, often refusing to eat new foods, including pellets. If a budgie is raised on a varied diet or pellets, this shouldn't be a problem. Budgies enjoy an assortment of toys, especially mirrors where they can talk to their reflection. They also enjoy regular bathing.
